If your voice is coming through too loud, too quiet, or wildly uneven, the fix almost always involves a mix of three things: the operating system input level, any per-app gain on top of it, and how you are actually using the microphone. This guide walks through each, for both Windows and macOS, and explains why a static slider is usually not enough.
Every other layer sits on top of this one, so get it right first.
Mic boost is just additional amplification applied after your microphone's native gain. It makes quiet things louder, but it also makes loud things louder, along with room noise, fan hum, keyboard clicks, and HVAC. Use it only when a mic really cannot be heard at 100 percent — often a sign the mic itself is wrong for the job.
Most communication and recording apps apply their own gain on top of the operating system. Adjusting one without the other is why people end up sounding fine on one app and blown out on another.
Rule of thumb: set the system input first, then open each app and let its meter be the source of truth when you are using that app.
Moving the mic two inches is usually louder than moving the slider twenty percent. Three placement mistakes cause most volume problems:
A desktop condenser wants to sit 6 to 12 inches from your mouth. A headset mic sits just off to the side of your lips, not directly in front of them.
You can tune every slider perfectly while calibrating, then go live and still end up too loud. Why? Because you are not the same person when you are calm versus when you are excited. Most people gain 6 to 10 dB of volume during a heated conversation or a good gameplay moment, which is more than any auto-gain feature comfortably corrects for. The result: you sound fine for the first minute, then steadily louder — and because you are the one speaking, you do not notice.

For most desktop mics, 70 to 85 percent on the system slider. Peaks should land in the upper-middle of a meter when you speak naturally, not pinned to the top.
Only as a last resort. Boost amplifies everything, including background noise. Get the right mic and placement before you reach for boost.
Because human volume drifts upward during conversations, gameplay, and teaching. Static settings cannot fix dynamic voice. Real-time feedback can.
